Security in Hostels
Recently, a laptop and a cell phone were stolen from Prasoon Mishra’s (a UG 2 student) room. This is not the first such case IIIT has seen. In fact, there have been a spate of monetary and cell-phone thefts in the hostels of late. Unfortunately, people don’t seem to learn from mistakes. Both the campus life and the wardens had been silent on this thus far. It is only after the unfortunate laptop case that a few steps like not allowing the newspaper guy in OBH have been taken.
Do IIIT hostels have enough security? Can something be done about it? Can thefts in hostel be prevented? Issues which need some urgent working upon.

I think security can’t be ensured because of the very fact that nobody wants the tough rules and without tough rules there is no security …

This has happened multiple times.

Last year I saw some housekeeping guy with very costly cell-phone(would probably cost around 10K). Personally I believe that they should not be allowed inside hostel after a particular time (say 12 noon). Most of the time I see them having fun in late noon hours, which they can surely have outside hostels as well. Also, like companies security check can also be done on them.
These things are serious and must be taken seriously.

I dont think a house keeping guy will ever dare to take away a laptop.. they are checked while leaving the hostel. such things are taken away by known friends only. who knows when your wing is going to be free and you are not at your room.
one more thing when you are spending 60k on a laptop why dont you put another 300-500Rs on a lock..

lets us lock our rooms instead of fuming at some house keeping guy..
please let us not have corporate style security on campus…

Well, what do we do now? With the security themselves being responsible for this theft, I’m starting to wonder how secure the campus really is!
